artist conversation- Jeff Dulla

There was a very interesting piece displayed in the galleries this week. It was in the Gotav East gallery and it was a very vibrant and complex painting. It immediately captured my attention and I was determined to write my view of this piece. There were a few other large paintings, very similar to this one, displayed in the gallery, as well, however, this one was more gripping. It was a large painting that took up an entire wall. The colors used are quite captivating. From afar, one can immediately see the presence of a powerful tree with the various bright and dark reds used to create it and the glorified temple, with its golden hues andivine presence. this piece had very bright colors for the sun.  the blue contracts very nice to the darkness of the picture. Dulla’s strokes in this painting is also another element that adds to the complexity and texture of the piece. Dulla states that his work is “oriented and spontaneous.” He also explains that all the elements including the detailed strokes parallels chaos theory also known as “the butterfly effect.” This concept is highlight that something can seem insignificant can actually make a bigger impact. I like that Dulla played with this concept and added it to this piece.

week 15 conversations

this week i interviewed an awesome person who happened to be a film major. Her name is Yesenia Chavez and loves making videos on her own time. She is a first year at CSULB and commutes from Downy. She went to Warren High school. She is really passionate about film and believes it is one of the best ways to express a thought.  her page is awesome and contains some of her film projects. I asked her more about why she decided to choose film and she said that she really got into it in high school. at her high school they did like morning announcements over the tvs on campus.  or at least i think that’s the way she described it.  and she got involved with the recording and editing.  she seemed to really liked it so now she would like to study film.  since its her first year it too early to say what she exactly wants to do but I wish her the best of luck here at the university.

the plates are designed like a cross. It depends on the angle and mentality at which you decide to look at the piece with. For some reason the plates really drew me in. The lighting also casted shadows beneath the plates which gave it a more intense look. In my picture, the plates look a little like they were floating, but again it’s just the shadows. I thought it was pretty cool something as random as plates could be made into art. I could not exactly decipher or understand what they piece was supposed to represent. Honestly to me, it looked cool and that is why I picked this piece.  All in all, the piece was interesting to look at and the lighting made it look even better. It was an awesome display.\

Learning about the exhibit, I figured out that there were 145 plates. These were made with stoneware clay and a satin white glaze fired to about 2250 degrees Fahrenheit. This is incredibly hot, and it only makes me wonder the process behind these plates. Something so simple was made with so much care. Knowing this process gives more valuable to the plates. This is amazing work and facts! the simplicity of this project is what attracted me so much …20141113_111144check out his page https://wordpress.com/tag/gatov-west/

artist conversation- Hicks

. This artist had awesome 3D objects that stood out. they had so many colors but i chose to take pictures of some gold pieces. The objects were shapes that included circles, triangles, squares, rectangles, pillars, and you can imagin how many other different shapes there were. Also, the objects were painted in very colorful colors that really stood out to me. I personally liked the piece the right, because this one was very glittery and it was a nice shade of blue. I like glitter and I liked how these pieces contained glitter. my favorite pieces looked like gold figures. they had many different shapes. the shapes were unrecognizable making it way cooler that ever.20141106_110320check out his page athttp://wordpress.com/tag/hicks
